Cloud Hosting in Algeria: The Questions Every Company Should Ask

A due diligence framework for comparing security, availability, backups, support, reversibility, and total cost before signing.

Decision supported

Do not assess a cloud provider only by data-centre location or monthly price. Verify service scope, security, measured availability, restorable backups, support, subcontracting, exit capability, data protection, and total cost in realistic operating scenarios.

In this brief

  1. Describe the workload before comparing providers
  2. Questions to ask before signing
  3. Turn promises into verifiable evidence
  4. Calculate total cost and incident cost
  5. Composite example: an order portal dependent on ERP
  6. Recommended actions

Executive summary

  • Local does not automatically mean secure, compliant, or resilient.
  • An SLA without measurement, exclusions, and consequences is difficult to govern.
  • A backup becomes credible after a documented restore test.
  • Price and test reversibility before dependency grows.

Describe the workload before comparing providers

Document users, data classes, peak demand, dependencies, acceptable downtime, recovery targets, support hours, and growth. The same provider may be suitable for one workload and unsuitable for another.

Questions to ask before signing

  • Who operates each layer and which controls remain with the customer?
  • Where are primary data, replicas, backups, logs, and support access located?
  • How are availability and support response measured?
  • When was the last complete restore test?
  • Which subcontractors can access or interrupt the service?
  • How are data, configurations, and keys exported on exit?

Turn promises into verifiable evidence

Request architecture and responsibility matrices, sample incident reports, restore evidence, monitoring exports, support escalation, and an exit demonstration. Certifications support due diligence but do not replace scope verification.

Calculate total cost and incident cost

Model compute, storage, traffic, backups, monitoring, support, licences, integration, growth, and exit over twelve months. Add the business cost of credible outage and recovery scenarios.

Composite example: an order portal dependent on ERP

High cloud availability does not protect an order portal whose ERP connector is a single point of failure. The service-level design must cover the complete business path.

Decisions to make now

Recommended actions

  1. 01Write a one-page criticality sheet per workload.
  2. 02Send the same due-diligence questions to shortlisted providers.
  3. 03Require restore and export demonstrations before a long commitment.
  4. 04Model twelve-month growth, support, traffic, and exit cost.
  5. 05Have business, IT, security, and procurement approve shared responsibility.

Watch points

  • Rules applicable to processed or transferred data.
  • Changes in local connectivity, redundancy, and managed services.
  • Egress fees and proprietary formats that grow with volume.

Frequently asked questions

Is cloud hosted in Algeria automatically compliant?

No. Location is one factor; compliance depends on processing, data, actors, measures, transfers, and applicable formalities.

Which SLA should we require?

Match it to business impact and insist on precise scope, measurement, exclusions, support, recovery targets, and consequences.

How do we verify a backup?

Restore it in isolation, check integrity, time the recovery, and prove the application restarts with its dependencies.
